Storyline

Announcement

Despite the greatest minds in the Alpha Quadrant working day and night to resolve the temporal anomaly crisis, two years later, the galaxy finds itself no closer to a solution. Vic Fontaine might just be a humble holographic singer, but he’d like to suggest they start looking in a different direction: music. It transcends time and space, it shares many qualities with various branches of science, and it just might put researchers in the right mood to get that “Eureka” moment they’ve been searching for. As out there as Vic’s suggestion might seem, Voyager’s EMH believes there’s something to it. He and La Forge have devised a complex algorithm to search for patterns in music that might relate to the temporal anomaly crisis. [1]

Prologue

  • Vic Fontaine: "Gotta say, Captain, I see a lotta long faces come through my lounge these days. Who could blame 'em? Ripped from their homes, their time periods, without a solution in sight–that's gotta take a lot out of even the hardest of hearts."
  • Vic Fontaine: "Y'know what some of those geniuses working on this time anomaly thing need? Music. Good music. They need something other than the beeps and boops of all those machines. I've heard that music can actually help the mind, just like it's good for the soul."
  • Virtuoso Doctor: "Leave it to an inebriated lounge singer to think he understands something as massive as temporal dislocation. However, melodies aligning with sound waves and playing a role in actual time travel: now there's a novel concept."
  • Alan-A-Dale: "With the Doctor's help, I've been working on an algorithm to draw correlations between melodic frequencies and points of temporal distortion. The link may be even more substantial than expected. But we could use your help, Captain. The more melodic samples we have, the better."

Intermezzo

  • Virtuoso Doctor: "Captain, you've certainly managed to gather us quite the pool of samples, but perhaps you'd be so inclined to actually put those leadership skills of yours to sme practical use? We have a bit of a political crisis on our hands here."
  • Alan-A-Dale: "Word has gotten out about our efforts here. I'd be lying if I said the enthusiasm didn't shock me, but I suspect some are here for personal gain, not the advancement of science. The Klingons, Ferengi, and Bajorans are all pushing to have their samples prominently represented."
  • Choice A
    • Captain: "I find the oral traditions of the Klingons to convey a special sort of depth."
    • Virtuoso Doctor: "I'm not sure 'depth' is the word I would use, Captain. My assessment aside, the epic Klingon operas do seem to have quite a following. They seem to evoke quite the emotion in the Klingons. It might be enough to bridge the fabric of time itself...'might' being the key word."
  • Choice B
    • Captain: "The Ferengi have an intriguing, if manipulative, ability to create popular hits."
    • Alan-A-Dale: "No one could ever accuse the Ferengi of not knowing their market. Though I have to confess, Captain, I've been known to indulge in Ferengi pop from time to time as well. Sometimes you just need some musical comfort food."
  • Choice C
    • Captain: "The deep, soulful melodies of the Bajorans' music might be just what we need."
    • Virtuoso Doctor: "I may not subscribe to the Bajorans' particular belief system, Captain, but even I feel there is something there. If these Prophets really are as the Bajorans say, then perhaps, yes, the melodies they inspire will be enough to repair the temporal anomaly."
  • Alan-A-Dale: "I think we might be on to something here. At any rate, it's worth a try. Captain, see if you can scrounge up those melodies for us, and anything else you might find that could be of help."

Epilogue

  • Virtuoso Doctor: "Well, the Klingons certainly appear to be pleased with themselves. The inclusion of their music is practically a historical milestone for them. You'd think if they care this much about inclusion in a Federation study, they'd actually want to join the Federation proper."
  • Alan-A-Dale: "One would think... still, while we haven't been able to draw any direct correlations, readings are showing the appearance of new objects affiliated with the Klingons. This might not be a major solution, but it does feel like a step in the right direction..."
